MNICH & OTHER TOWERS AND NEEDLES
Mnich 2068 m (‘Monk’ in English) is one of the most recognizable peak of Polish Tatras (the other two are Giewont and Rysy). Mnich is a symbol of inaccessible, a dream of climbers and alpinists. However not impressive when it comes to height, it is the most discerning and remarkable peak in Morskie Oko surrounding. It can be reached via multiple climbing routes but for others it’s reachable only via one route.
Duration of summit ascent: 4-5 hours from Morskie Oko refuge. Time needed to get to Morskie Oko – not included.
Difficulties: II in local scale. From the top participants have to rappel (with a guide’s help of course)
Number of participants: max. 2
The tour can be extended by reaching a twin tower of Zadni Mnich (2172). However objective technical difficulties are the same as on Mnich, ascent is more difficult and exposed. It finishes with a spectacular 40 m rappel via Uskok Zadniego Mnicha.
There are many more towers and needles in Tatras that can be reached only via climbing routes with use of technical climbing equipment. With a guide’s help they are to be climbed by fit tourists.
